Let’s Talk Lycra

We get it working with Lycra can feel like a bit of a workout. But with a few tried-and-true tips (straight from our wonderful sewing-savvy Candy at The Sewing Factory), you can tame even the stretchiest of fabrics and create beautifully professional pieces.

Here’s what we’ve learned:

1. Start with the right needle 🪡

Ballpoint needles are a must! They glide through stretch fabrics without causing damage no snags, no fuss.

2. Be kind to your thread 🧵

We love using bulk thread (with those soft, textured filaments!) especially in overlockers and cover seamers. It adds a smooth, gentle finish ideal for seams that sit right next to your skin.

3. Go easy on your overlocker ⚠️

Avoid pulling the fabric through or holding it too tightly it’ll only mess with your stitch tension. Let the machine do the work!

4. But cover-stitching? That’s a different story ➰

Here, a little tension is your friend. Keep the fabric taught for a neat, even stitch.

5. Watch out for shading 🎨

Double-check you’ve got the right side of your fabric facing out and keep those patterns running the same way to avoid mismatched tones.

6. Stitch smart on flat machines 🧷

Flat-stitching Lycra doesn’t work on its own those seams will pop! Use a zigzag or overlocker and lift the presser foot regularly to avoid stretching the fabric (especially when adding zips).

7. Speaking of zips...

They’re a bit of a beast with Lycra but doable! Go slow, ease the fabric in gently, and with practice, you’ll get it lying flat (not curly!).

8. Adding poppers? 🧲

Pop in some stay tape first to stop them from pulling through trust us, future you will be grateful.

9. And finally... match those patterns!

Lycra’s forgiving, but mismatched seams will stand out like a sore thumb. Take your time and align.
